| Born
in Santa Ana California, designer Red Carter studied at Otis/Parson
School of Art and Design in Los Angeles, CA. Growing up in Southern
California, Red Carter had the perfect opportunity to learn valuable
lessons about swimwear fashion. Red Carter was a competitive swimmer
and record-breaker in sprinting, diving and water polo. After Red
Carter's sports career ended, Red Carter entered the entertainment
industry. Red Carter has been featured in roles in commercials,
voiceovers, and has had small movie roles. Red Carter has always
been an entertainer at heart, and so he visualizes himself as the
Austin Powers of the bikini business.
Red
Carter's career in junior sportswear and active wear began in San
Francisco. where Red Carter worked at Esprit under the direction
of Suzy Tompkins. Red then moved to Southern California and held
positions with Guess Jeans, the Marciano Brothers, Rampage, Mossimo,
Victorias Secret, Linda Wachner, and eventually Oscar de la Renta.
The results of Red Carter's vast experience have culminated in the
understanding of fit, form and function, unparalleled in the swimwear
industry. His use of details from both the swim and sportswear categories
allow him to set himself apart by his understanding of subtle detailing
that he juxtaposes with bold, expressive prints. Every swimsuit
that Red Carter makes has a signature red button on the back as
Red's personal trademark.
Red
Carter moved to South Beach, Florida in 2003 and immediately realized
that Miami was missing something on its beaches. As Red Carter watched
hotel after hotel rise and be remodeled, Red Carter noticed that
the important designers of the world came to South Beach, but they
never stayed. Then and there, Red Carter decided that he would be
the voice of an emerging culture and try to create a product to
embody the attitudes and lifestyles of Miami and South Beach.
This
year marks a landmark third season for Red Carter Swimwear and the
best is yet to come. As he spends more and more time in Miami, watching
the neon signs glow with the art deco backgrounds he says he cannot
help but see the fantastic silhouettes of years gone by. "Miami
is a beautifully painted lady by day, a wild neon glam rock star
at night. Thus, my collection this season represents both sides
of what Miami has to offer, historic days and hot sexy nights."
Red
Carter first chose to use the pastel tones of the painted buildings
as a backdrop to some of the art deco motifs that he found in freezes
and textile patterns that he could find about the 1920s. Red Carter
used these references to also create bold architecturally specific
placement prints in some of the swimwear. The Art Deco period was
an amazing time of geometric discovery mixed with flowers and ornamentation.
By finding antique Deco wallpaper swatches he was able to create
a specific mood that pays homage to Miami's amazing backdrop. Secondly,
Red Carter used geometric cut out shapes with bold and graphic lines
that emphasizes a woman's curves but leaves her feeling strong and
sexy with the use of black.
For
the nightlife portion of Red Carter's collection, Red Carter found
the use of bold animal motif placement prints to show the true fire
of Miami's nightlife. Red Carter mixed these references with tigers,
cheetah and ethnic prints to create a true bohemian atmosphere.
Red Carter says that "by placing the motifs in strategic places
it creates a feeling that you are the animal. And after living here
in Miami for a few years I have met my share of wild animals. I
also used amazing jewelry to accent the pieces as if you were planning
on wearing the suit out on the town. I feel that Miami is the one
place that your swimwear can travel from the pool to the party."
Miami
is a place of passion, and a place where everyday people get the
chance to feel like they have stepped back in time. Where the neon
signs cast a bright shadow on the hot pavement. And where the palm
trees dance at night under the starry skies. No wonder that when
you move there the moons glow and warmth of a people who live there
inspire you. What was the inspiration for Red Carter South Beach
2006 Collection? The people who live there.
